Objectifs

We run a range of non profit-making schools and colleges for students of all ages with widely varying needs, including more able students and those with high support needs arising out of challenging behaviours. We also offer outreach and other educational support services.

Profil

Our curriculums are geared to the needs of children and young people with autism with a particular focus on nurturing communication and social skills. We cater for a wide range of abilities and needs through Individual Educational Programmes and our high staff to student ratio. Every student receieves a broad and balanced curriculum which is individuallt designed to reflect their abilited and meet their needs. The rich and rewarding educational opportunities that we offer give our students a stepping stone to a positive future.

It is the policy of The National Autistic Society (NAS) that:

Schools admit pupils with a diagnosis of autism. In the first instance they will be pupils who require specialist schooling, but who may proceed to different levels of inclusion in mainstream education, or LEA special schools.

Schools will offer broad, balanced and relevant curricula, which will be subject to regular and continuous review and will, as appropriate, include the National Curriculum in England.

Schools will maintain an appropriate ratio of staff to pupils. Small groups and individual teaching will ensure that pupils are offered education to meet their needs. Individual programmes, positive intervention and support will facilitate continuous development.

Individual programmes will be set in the context of the schools broad, balanced and relevant curriculum and arrangements for residential care. The role of the school is regarded not only in academic terms, but also for the purpose of educating pupils in social, practical and communication skills.

The schools, parents/carers and representatives of local authorities will be encouraged to work collaboratively to support the education of the pupils.

The schools will implement agreed policies on behaviour support, sex education and child protection, reflecting best national practice.

The schools and the NAS have written policies, which are available for inspection.

All NAS schools are supported by a range of acknowledged experts in the field of autism.

Résultats

The 2008 Ofsted report of Broomhayes school stated that it "provides its students with a good quality education and care that meets their needs and allows them to make good progress."

In the Helen Allison School 2009 Parents' Survey, the majority of parents strongly agree or agree that their child likes school and that their child is making good progress.
