Mission

The primary goals of Free The Children are to free children from poverty and exploitation and free young people from the notion that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world. Through domestic empowerment programs and leadership training, Free The Children inspires young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens and become agents of change for their peers around the world.

Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries.

Adopt a Village is Free The Children’s unique holistic development program that works in collaboration with communities to develop local capacity in the area of education and other basic needs. We’ve seen first hand that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and ending the exploitation of children. It’s where social and economic development begins, and the reason why Free The Children has committed to building schools and education centres for marginalized children around the world.

All of our efforts reflect Free The Children’s Core Values: Commitment and Passion; 'We' Thinking and 'We' Acting; Getting the job done...Period; Humility, gratitude and appreciation in all endeavours; Honouring every stakeholder; Empowering youth to change the world; and Shameless idealism.

Results

Free The Children has a remarkable record of achievement, initiating community-based development projects around the world and inspiring young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens. Since 1995, we have:

• Built more than 500 schools that educate over 50,000 children daily
• Distributed more than 207,500 school and health kits to children in need
• Equipped 23,500 women to be economically self-sufficient
• Developed an efficient administrative models that allows 91 cents of every donated dollar to go to programs that directly benefit children
• And much more!

Free The Children has also been recognized with numerous awards including the 2006 World Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child, the 2006 Human Rights Award from the United Nations/World Association of Non-Government Organizations (WANGO), the 2007 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, the World Economic Forum Medal, the State of the World Forum Award, and the Roosevelt Freedom Medal.
